Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has eventually announced his resignation from his position. Mr. Trudeau’s resignation, after almost 10 years in power, does not come as a surprise shown by his statement that it became clear that he could not become the leader for the next election due to internal conflict. Trudeau has been suffering from the responsibility on real estate and inflation issues, and especially, failing in immigration policy played a huge role in distrust of the Trudeau cabinet. To make matters worse, President-elect Trump recently threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian products based on illegal immigrants and drugs flowing into the United States from Canada, which further worsened his position, and unable to bear the pressure, this led Trudeau to announce his resignation. With many other reasons, such as the resignation of the finance minister who was his closest allies, but most of all, the loss of the trust of the voters made it difficult to expect succeeding in regaining the power in the general election coming up in the second half of this year. The voters must have judged that their leader should step down in order to select the next successor and prepare for the upcoming election by putting a new leader in front to revive public opinion until the next general election.

In fact, there is not much that we can actually feel about Trudeau's resignation, the decline in the approval rating of the Liberal Party, and the possibility of the Conservative Party taking power. However, if the Conservative Party takes power in the future, the immigration policy will be different from the past. As the Wall Street Journal analyzed that progressive politic powers are weakening worldwide and major advanced countries are shifting to the right, the indiscriminate increase in immigrants during the recession has brought the backlash from the working/labor class that supports progressives. Pierre Poilievre of the current leader of the Canadian Conservative Party is pintpointing on this issue and is advocating an anti-immigration policy, especially by raising issues such as the rapid increase in international students and low-income foreign temporary workers and claiming that the Liberal government has destroyed the Canadian system. Judging from these actions, it seems that if the Conservative Party takes power, it will bring about major changes in Canada's study abroad and immigration policies.

On the other side, the question of whether the immigration policy of the conservative party will have only negative effects on foreigner’s immigration to Canada must be seen with different perspective. Nowadays, the main reason for many people hesitating immigration to Canada is because of soaring prices, real estate, and the limited medical system. Therefore, Pierre’s argument with building more houses, expanding medical system and secure access to jobs before accepting immigrants seems reasonable. If we have to leave the country we were born to and take great adventure of immigration, the country we want to immigrate to must be "attractive," and it seems that Canada needs a long time to acquire the "attractiveness" that can appeal to foreigners.

As a  personal wish, I look forward to Canadian immigration which looks further beyond.
