Employment requirements

 

 

 

Completion of secondary school is usually required.

Completion of a four- to five-year apprenticeship program is usually required.

Trade certification for construction electricians is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and available, but voluntary, in British Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Trade certification for electricians (domestic and rural) is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario.

Trade certification for electrical control (machine) builders is available, but voluntary, in Ontario.

Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified construction electricians upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination.

You need a Certificate of Qualification to work in some skilled trades in Ontario.

A Certificate of Qualification is required to work in regulated skilled trades. Some unregulated skilled trades also require a Certificate of Qualification. You can only apply for this certification if:

• You have a Certificate of Apprenticeship for your trade, OR
• Your Trade Equivalency Assessment application has been approved.
• If you have several years of experience in the trade you want to work in, you must apply for a Certificate of Qualification.
• If You Do Not Have Several Years of Experience
  If you do not have at least 2 to 3 years of experience in the trade you would like to work in, you may need to do an apprenticeship
